Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and lead by Matron Thorn and Ascaris (both active under the black metal insignias of Benighted In Sodom), ÆVANGELIST play dark death metal to end all death metal. Like in a terrifying exorcism, the duo has extracted the very essence of the genre out of its carcass, showing it in all its putridity and disgust through the asphyxiating sounds and the growling choirs of the debut album “De Masticatione Mortuorum In Tumulis”. There’s a disturbing and totally hallucinating atmosphere haunting their songs; something that assaults and violates the senses, and that works on the subconscious in subliminal, occult ways. Comparable perhaps to Portal, Mitochondrion, Vasaeleth and even late Blut Aus Nord, ÆVANGELIST ride on majestic black wings, dispensing chaos, darkness and fever like rotten hosts with which to feed countless agonizing souls. You won’t find anything pleasant in this dark epiphany. No melodies, no nice hooks, no frills. Just ugliness and utter despair; the tortured screams of those who already inhaled the nauseating, unbereable stench of death while waiting for the horrendous vacuum of non-existence that lays beyond… “WE ARE ÆVANGELIST, THE PROPHETIC ART OF THE ULTIMATE OBLIVION OF THE UNIVERSE, HERALDS OF AN APOCALYPTIC DEATH THEOCRACY. LOOK UPON THE SETTING SUN AND DESPAIR.” ÆVANGELIST DE MASTICATIONE MORTUORUM IN TUMULIS _________________________________________________________ FORMAT: CD CATALOG N. IVR-017 1. Hailing from Santiago, Chile, NAR MATTARU are the true and worthy heirs of DOMINUS, one of the most ancient Chilean death metal bands, originally founded in 1992 and later re-incarnated into DOMINUS XUL. Bassist/guitarist Francisco Bravo and drummer Andrés Gonzáles were there since the early days, taking their first steps into death metal and passing into legend. Strengthened by 20 years spent in the underground playing metal, together with singer Carlos Artarys they are now the flesh and blood of NAR MATTARU, a new death metal beast consacrated to the occult. Through a maelstrom of dark riffs and vertiginous bass grooves, NAR MATTARU dig deep into the labyrinths of time, conjuring up ancient forces of evil from spectral dimensions where night is eternal and the most cruel and bloodthirsty Sumerian demons rule supreme. “Enuma Elish”, the band’s debut album, includes the four crushing cuts from the much celebrated “In The Black Spheres Of Time” demo 2009 (including a jaw-dropping rendition of Incantation’s classic track “Abolishment Of Immaculate Serenity”) together with three new cyclopean compositions and amazing covers of Autopsy (“Twisted Mass Of Burnt Decay”) and Kratherion (“Tirano Constrictor”). BIOGRAPHY INNER SANCTVM was formed in 1989 in Montevideo, Uruguay, as the brainchild of Heber W. Hammer, and since their very inception it has been marked by events that would characterize the uniqueness of the band. Heber had already formed one band before, Melkor Morgoth in 1986, being that band the very first one in Uruguay’s land to perform Extreme Metal, but the best was yet to come. Pablo Van Lagat would join on bass and vocals (ex Angkor Vat), and Adolfo Loskin on drums, and just a few weeks after the forming of INNER SANCTVM, the band recorded a Live Tape out of a show in Montevideo, that tape was passed to some people in Chile, and the band was then invited to perform live in Santiago, Chile, being this a very rare situation for a band coming from Uruguay, and let’s say it, a rare situation for any underground band just being formed. Adolfo wouldn’t be able to travel to Chile so Andy Viglioni was brought in as drummer. In Chile the band got an amazing feedback from the crowd, and in Chile also is where they got in contact to start working on their debut four tracks Demo Tape “Shadows In The Mirror”. The popularity of the band started to grow, not only in Uruguay, Chile, Argentina or Brazil, but they started to get great reviews from all over the world, mainly European ‘Zines that were celebrating INNER SANCTVM’s music and approach. By the end of 1993 INNER SANCTVM travels again to Chile to play a show with SARCÓFAGO, and to record their first full length,...
Based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, and comprised solely of Andrew Lampe, THE WAKEDED GATHERING have released the acclaimed debut album “Tenements Of Ephemera” in 2010 as a pro-printed CD-r limited to 100 copies, and later also as a tape co-produced by Dark Descent Records and Skeleton Plague Records. While waiting for a definitive CD edition of “Tenements Of Ephemera” as well as for a new full-length album under the banner of I, Voidhanger Records, THE WAKEDEAD GATHERING vomit out a new 5-track EP of obscure Lovecraftian death metal aptly titled “Dark Circles”. Wrapped in an ominous cover artwork representing a flesh-eating gate opened to infinite voids, “Dark Circles” follows the same path of the debut, reviewing in a very personal way the early Incantation / early Immolation canons, this time with even more emphasis on crushing raw sounds, rhythmic changes, dark twisted melodies, and cosmic horror atmospheres. Now leave your mortal remains behind, enter the dark circle, and inhale the eclipse! THE WAKEDEAD GATHERING DARK CIRCLES ________________________________________________ FORMAT: CD-EP CATALOG N. TEMPESTUOUS FALL is the new funeral death/doom project of Dis Pater, the Australian artist behind the acclaimed black metal acts MIDNIGHT ODYSSEY and THE CREVICES BELOW. Through 5 majestic songs, the band’s debut “The Stars Would Not Awake You” paints a nocturnal world of romanticism and decadence. A place of the soul, where the broken dreams and the bitterness of life turn into dark poetry and fly on the wings of elegant and moving melodies, granitic guitars, and sumptuous arrangements of keyboards and violins, while growl and clean voices tell stories of Love and Death. “I feel genuinely positive about Tempestuous Fall,” says Dis Pater. “It’s a bit of a milestone for me, something I have wanted to do for so long, but just never really sat down and did it. I guess the only thing holding me back was myself.” With TEMPESTUOUS FALL Dis Pater has revisited the early 90’s death/doom metal of My Dying Bride and Anathema, re-thought through the experience in Midnight Odyssey and enshrouded in modern funeral doom atmospheres. “I realized something that maybe is obvious to other people: My music represents the part of me that remembers and holds on to memories,” explains the artist, “the memories of first listening to certain bands and feeling that tremendous sensation of something that completely expresses the thoughts and problems inside me. This new album is one of the truest expressions of my inner self, even more so than Midnight Odyssey or The Crevices Below.” TEMPESTUOUS FALL THE STARS WOULD NOT AWAKE YOU _________________________________________________________ FORMAT: CD CATALOG N. Under the guidance of French guitarist/vocalist Guido Saint Roch and his La Guilde De La Malabeste, YSENGRIN play what they call hermetic dark metal: esoteric, occult music that reminds of a Middle-Age of metal when there were no boundaries between its sub-genres, and spontaneity and attitude were the most important values. With their elegant yet primitive style, YSENGRIN capture the essence of early 90s Hellenic black metal as well as Mortuary Drape’s morbidity and death fascination, dipping everything into the doomy, 70s-tinged heavy metal of Death SS and Mercyful Fate. Graced with a cover painting by reknown Finnish artist Turkka G. Rantanen (Adramelech, Demigod, Depravity, Demilich and many others), YSENGRIN’s third full-length,”To Endotaton”, is a conceptual one-track album of 40 minutes that describes an initiatic rite taking place in the dark meanders of a cavern. Sometimes cryptic and melancholic, other times triumphantly epic and darkly psychedelic, enriched with delicate acoustic passages, sumptuous guitar solos, eerie keyboards and deep growls, “To Endotaton” is the allegory of a mystical journey through the deepest recesses of the soul, in search of “la Lumière qui surpasse touts les lumières”, the Light which surpasses all lights. AN OVERVIEW BY JOHN BRENNER OF REVELATION Since 1992, guitarist Josh Hart and drummer Chad Rush have been writing Chowder’s music, bringing together their early exposure to doom metal, progressive rock, and hardcore. Although he originally played bass in Maryland metal bands Revelation and Unorthodox, Hart took to the guitar for writing his own material. Once original bassist Joe Ruthvin left the band for MD doom stalwarts Earthride, Chowder remained in limbo until finding bassist Doug Williams. Doug came to Chowder from the hardcore scene’s Next Step Up, a band that would feature at different times all three current members of Chowder. The band recorded demos in the 90s, but it wasn’t until 2007 that Chowder recorded their debut EP, released on Bland Hand Records. Immediately after recording the EP, Chowder’s ambitions broadened and deepened. Taking their unique vision even further, they wrote a new song, titled “Passion Rift,” which would become the epic title cut for their first full-length album. Nearly two years in the making, “Passion Rift” encompasses everything that makes Chowder a great band: off-kilter arrangements, abrupt time-changes, memorable melodies, creepy dissonances, top-notch songwriting, performances, and arrangements, and a true passion for making heavy music. Tastefully strewn throughout the record are analog and digital keyboards, cello, and various samples and sound effects, giving a texture to the songs that grows more rewarding with each listen. Songs such as “The Innsmouth Look” and “Head Full of Rats,” with their forward-rushing, unrelenting progressive metal, sit next to atmospheric pieces such as “Mazuku” and “Mysterioid,” in a mix part hardcore, part Lovecraft, and part autobiography. And then there is...
Formed in the year 2000 with the aim to play slow, filthy, psychedelic music (like it happened on the debut album “A Bad Trip To…”, whose raw and smoked sounds stood between those of Electric Wizard and Nightstick), Italian doomsters MALASANGRE have gradually evolved into an extreme doom metal beast. Slowly, their tunes have become more primitive, darker and heavier than before. The result of such further barbarization was called “Inversus”, a three-chapter album “drifting in and out of ambience and devastating, droning doom, wielding the strange but potent combination of funeral and sludge”. After seven years of hard work and isolation, MALASANGRE are out of their shrine, ready to spread their apocalyptic metal in the form of “Lux Deerit Soli”: a concept album featuring 2 long suites, for over 72 minutes of trance-inducing, absolutistic black-doom. “Lux Deerit Soli” is a deep meditation on the dark age of Kali Yuga we’re living in, and on how to go through it with the help of alchemical knowledges. Despite its bipolar structure, the album describes an initiatic voyage in 3 phases. The first track, “SA TA”, testifies the current age of chaos and mankind’s cultural involution, ending with terrifying quotes from Vishna Purana’s Chapter V. The second track, “NA MA”, seeks the final Illumination, propitiating Man’s capacity of becoming one with the Absolute. The third phase lays in between, and all of them coexist as parts of a unifying manifestation: a combination of pure concepts and ideals which make of MALASANGRE’s “Lux Deerit Soli” an obscure tool of transcendental heaviness. Born in 1990 by the will of Cal Scott, once guitarist for UK’s death/grind act Necrosanct, UMBAH is the metal equivalent of the indecipherable nightmares of an alien computer-god with serious mental illness and destructive appetites. “I compute, therefore I am”, he repeats to himself while he deletes with a simple gesture what’s left of the human race: a file into a recycle bin, waiting for permanent erasure… Only partially assimilable to other sonic extremists like Cephalic Carnage, Obscura, The Berzerker, Meshuggah, Fear Factory and Skinny Puppy, UMBAH speaks with its own voice. Despite the countless albums behind his back, Cal Scott’s approach is still that of a space explorer. He ventures into unknown territories hungry with new experiences and discoveries, and not afraid of experimenting with complex mechanical textures and contaminated metal sounds.
